I am one who can create an entire world that never existed. I can imagine in my head epic battles…or the quiet flutter of a butterfly’s wings. In my world, in these dimensions, a lone warrior can travel into the very belly of the beast to claim his queen or he can walk the halls of a high school with no memory of the night before, save for a burn mark in his palm.
I Am…Writer.
For this first post in a new feature for Wednesdays, I posed a question: What does it mean to you be a Writer?
I am ever-blessed to know so, many great, talented, extremely supportive people. Here are some of their answers. Enjoy. Take something, anything away from this. Share it. Do the same. Make it yours.
Me. It means finding out who I’m “supposed” to be. Who God called me to be. He gave me this gift. I’m running with it. For me it means-I have found my destiny. All else is beauty.
Being a writer means you don’t write because you want to, you write because you can’t NOT write. Being a writer means you spend every free moment thinking about your next story. You dream about writing. Being a writer means when people ask about your dreams, you smile and think of your book in Borders.
For me it’s rewarding yourself intrinsically before others reward you extrinsically. Love creating & anything else is bonus.
To me it means having a story to tell and telling it. As a fiction writer, it means providing escape and offering an avenue for imagination. It means creativity and expression. It means community.
To me, being a writer means taking my passion for the written word and giving myself an outlet that is just for me. As a homeschool mom, so much of my day and life is devoted to my girls and my family–and that’s great, but I started to lose myself, too. Writing gives me a creative outlet I can be proud of, and at the same time, I am setting an example for my children to never give up on their dreams. Best of all, my writing has led to amazing discussions in our homeschool and my six-year-old is now determined to be a published writer herself. They go around talking about inciting incidents, character development, plots, and vivid vocabulary. So in a way, writing is helping me achieve my main goal in home education–igniting a passion for learning and the written word in my children. You can’t beat that 🙂
Everything. Literally everything. I’ve always wanted this life and I finally have it. I can’t imagine ever doing anything else ever again.
What it means to be a writer for me…..living out a dream I had when I was barely 7-8 years old. Finally I’m doing it! Until that point I hadn’t realized that PEOPLE wrote those books I loved! Once I did it was awesome & I aspired to do what they did! Now I’m trying to fulfill that dream!
It means watching magic flow from your fingertips as you create your own universe…
To want or even need to write even if there is never any appreciation or award.
To be called a writer is still tooooo crazy for me.
To live is to write. That’s all I know! lol I actually have a bracelet that says that! You made me think of this quote: “I write for the same reason I breathe – because if I didn’t, I would die.” Isaac Asimov
Writing has become a part of my identity. I can’t imagine doing anything else. My mantra-History is a point of reference, not an anchor-opened the door to my muse at some point and I’ve never looked back, so to speak. Writing is almost liberating.
Being a writer means having the ability to make people feel something… whether it is to laugh, cry, think, etc. Too often in life, people forget the good stuff, the powerful feelings and get lost in the sameness of routine. As writers, we get to remind them– of what their first kisses tasted like, what it felt like to be in love the first time, etc. It’s an awesome thing.
It is my second life, just as real as the one most people see me live. some people like to escape into shows of others’ making through tv and books, I like to escape into my own.
It means “playing Goddess.” Creating another world to leave this one for…even if it’s just while on the potty.
To be a writer means to be me. Writers are often mistaken for mere storytellers (which I am). Yet we are so much more. Writing, to me, means to speak my ideas in a way that best expresses my inner self. Writing means to give voice to your inner struggles, your personal victories, your emotional progression. To write means to pour onto the page an assemblage of words and attempt to order them into something sensible.
To writer means to breathe–for the writer.
To me it means that no matter the outcome, I can say that I am constantly going after what I want.
For me, writing has always been a release. A way for me to be able to escape, for just a while and live in a world completely my own. I love to think of it as a single act of insanity that keeps me sane. And I honestly don’t know what I would do without it.
To see your world in a grain of sand and make it a physical gift unto the world, such is a treasure the likes of which can be taken beyond the grave.
I write because I must. I’ve tried not to write and it made me miserable. Writing is my key to happiness, my connection to God. I write to live.
Being a writer means giving life to those who can’t breathe, but can make us feel. Halflings hits the shelves Feb. 2012
This does not even scratch the surface but it is a great start. It is. In addition for me, everything I believe in-God, Christ, love, joy, peace, epicness, art, music, the color black, red, fantasy, history, battles of self, triumph, the bigger picture, supporting other, DOING unto others, writing…I’m able to put it all into my writing.
I Am Writer. These wonderful people are Writers. Five years from now…where will we be? Where? Who will we come to meet? And call Friends? WHAT will we be? We can all do this.
I Am Writer. We come in all shapes, colors, sizes. I Am Writer. We write differently. I Am Writer. We all have our own distinctive voice. I Am Writer. We write for different genres. I Am Writer. Some of us have pen names, some don’t. I Am Writer. Some-fantasy. Others, steampunk. More, nonfiction. We write in first person. We write in third. We write in omniscient pov.
It matters not.
I. Am. Writer.
A faithful friend is a strong defense: and he that hath found such an one hath found a treasure ~ Ecclesiastes 6:14
We are one. We are one. Brothers and sisters, we are one–Times Of Grace
Be blessed!
What say you?
P.S. I will be the first to say it: I’m tryna get paaaiid too. I’m sure you feel me.

Tymothy, thank you. Needed this right now. Very motivating post 🙂
I write for creativity. To clear my head of all the stories, characters and scenes that weigh it down. And, it’s fun.
❤ nice quotes too!
Bravo!

Once again the belief of “do it, go for it, say it” rings true! Thank you my Friend.

What a great post, Tymothy! When I was a kid and teenager, I always felt alone and like no one truly understood me. Now that I’m older and following my dreams, I’ve finally met people that get it. I’ve found friends that understand me and what it means to be a writer. I finally don’t feel alone anymore. And that’s a nice feeling.

Indeed. It is an epic feeling. There is nothing like it. Of course other than my faith, lol.
We are all here for the same reasons. We can push each other aside or we can pull and inspire and complement each others gifts. THAT’s #WriterLove.

Excellent post! I’m so happy I came across it. I definitely believe in being called by God to do something, and believing in that calling is what gets us all the way there.

You got it. Amazing. Believing it gets us there. YES!

Truly inspiring! I LOVE reading what being a writer means to everyone. I think this is a fantastic segment to do as we all could use inspiration and even a reminder of why we write when things get tough and it feels like wading through mud. Thank You!

Great post! I agree with all that you have written and all that the other writers have shared. I personally believe that writing is a God-given gift. It is something that burns within you like a flame that just refuses to be extinguished. I believe that every person on earth has a purpose. I am fortunate enough to know mine. It is to write. That is who I am in a nutshell. Stories are what weave together the patchwork quilts of every culture. Without stories passed down, there would be no history or identity. Stories are an integral part of the Human Condition. To write is to be called to a greater purpose.
I have just quit my day job after 10 years working towards this goal. Now I am jumping head first into being a Full Time Writer and I have never been more excited.
For me writing is a gift and a priviledge, an honour I do not take lightly.
